America's Cup: the Naples preliminary regattaWhat is the America's Cup?
The America's Cup, described by its competing teams as the oldest trophy in sport, is raced in the Bay of Naples in 2027. The challenger series, the Louis Vuitton Cup, starts on 22 May, and the Match itself, in which defender Emirates Team New Zealand meets the winning challenger, begins on 10 July. It is in this directory because, unusually for an event of this stature, some of the best views have been from a public waterfront.
Who goes to the America's Cup?
Sailing fans and Neapolitans in large numbers: at the September 2026 preliminary regatta the organisers reported tens of thousands of spectators along the Lungomare Caracciolo and in the Race Village. Around them, the teams' owners, sponsors and guests, and boats watching from spectator zones on the water.
How to watch the America's Cup
Watching has not been ticketed in the usual way. At the 2026 preliminary regatta, the Race Village at Rotonda Diaz, stretching along the Via Francesco Caracciolo, was free to enter, the road was closed to traffic, boats watched from designated spectator zones outside the race area, and racing was broadcast live on YouTube. Spectator arrangements for 2027 had not been published when this entry was checked.
What to know before going to the America's Cup
The calendar is long and the end date moves. The Louis Vuitton Cup runs for six weeks before the Match, and the Match ends when one team reaches the winning score, so 19 July is only the latest possible finish. Anyone travelling for the Match should plan around its opening weekend from 10 July rather than a final day that may come earlier. The Women's America's Cup, from 5 to 9 July, sits immediately before it.
America's Cup parties and side events
A summer-long America's Cup brings team, sponsor and partner hospitality, yacht parties in the bay and private events across the city and along the coast. Grand Circle organises none of it and sells no tickets, berths or hospitality for the America's Cup.
How to get to Naples
Naples International Airport at Capodichino is close to the city centre, and high-speed trains connect Naples Centrale with Rome in a little over an hour. In 2026 the Race Village was on the seafront at Rotonda Diaz, reached on foot along the Lungomare from the Chiaia district.
Where to stay for the America's Cup
The seafront districts of Chiaia and Santa Lucia are within walking distance of where the Race Village stood in 2026. Posillipo, further west along the bay, is quieter, and the Sorrento peninsula and Capri suit those combining the racing with a longer summer stay, at the cost of a ferry ride.
