Changi Airport and Jewel: A Practical Layover Guide
Plan a Changi layover around Jewel’s landside location, terminal transfers, tour eligibility and your airline’s check-in and boarding deadlines.
Changi offers places to eat, rest and explore between flights. The useful distinction is between airside facilities you can reach during transit and landside attractions that require immigration clearance.
If you are flying through, here is how to use it properly rather than sitting at a gate.
Is Jewel inside Changi Airport security?
Jewel Changi Airport is the doughnut-shaped glass complex attached to Terminal 1, built around the Rain Vortex, a 40-metre indoor waterfall that is the tallest of its kind. Around it climbs the Shiseido Forest Valley, a terraced indoor garden, and above that sits Canopy Park, with sky nets, mazes, a mirror maze and a bouncing net walk.
The critical detail: Jewel is on the public side of the airport. It is not in transit. To visit it between flights you must clear Singapore immigration, which means you need to be eligible to enter the country, and you need to leave enough time to come back through security afterwards.
The Rain Vortex runs a light and sound show in the evenings. If your layover lands after dark, that is the version to see.
What to do with each length of layover
Use these as planning options, then work backwards from the onward flight’s deadline. Arrival delays or a terminal change can remove time you expected to have.
- A short connection: stay airside; find food and rest facilities in your terminal.
- A longer airside wait: check lounge, shower and transit-hotel availability before walking to another terminal.
- A landside Jewel visit: check entry eligibility, submit the arrival card if required, and allow time to return through departure checks.
- A city outing: add both transport legs and a generous queue margin; keep the plan to one district.

Getting into town
MRT. The station sits under Terminals 2 and 3, with Skytrain connections from Terminal 1. Terminal 4 connects by complimentary shuttle bus. Ride to Tanah Merah, change to a westbound train, and continue to City Hall or Raffles Place. Taxi or ride-hail. Check the current quote and travel time. Allow for queues and traffic as well as the journey itself.
Booked transfer. Confirm the terminal, meeting point, luggage allowance and waiting arrangements with the operator.
Check the first and last trains for your route before relying on the MRT for a late arrival.
Sleeping, showering and waiting well
Changi is built for the long wait. There are paid shower facilities across the terminals, transit hotels airside for a few hours' sleep without clearing immigration, full hotels landside and in Jewel, and rest zones with reclining seats that are free to use.
Two practical tips. First, the quietest rest areas are usually a level above or below the main concourse rather than beside the gates. Second, if you are arriving on a red-eye and cannot check into your city hotel until afternoon, a shower and breakfast at the airport is a better start than dragging a suitcase around Marina Bay at 7am.
Arriving in Singapore properly
