What is Art Basel Miami Beach?

Art Basel was founded by three Basel gallerists in 1970, and Miami Beach is one of its four fairs, alongside Basel, Hong Kong and Paris. The Miami Beach edition is the fair's December show and the anchor of Miami Art Week, when galleries, collectors, curators and museum directors from across the Americas and Europe gather in one place for a week.

The scale explains its pull. The 2025 edition brought together 283 galleries from 43 countries and territories, 48 of them exhibiting for the first time, and welcomed more than 80,000 attendees across its VIP and public days, according to Art Basel's closing report.

What is new for 2026?

The 2026 fair is smaller by design. Art Basel has announced 272 exhibitors from more than 40 countries and a reconfigured show floor that uses about 12% less space, with around 10% fewer galleries in the main sector. Four hospitality plazas replace five to open longer sightlines, and the largest galleries, once grouped together, are now spread across the floor. More than 30 galleries are taking part for the first time.

"Our exhibitors have reinforced the value of a more focused environment," said Bridget Finn, the fair's director. The other headline date is the Art Basel Awards Night on Thursday, 3 December, at the New World Center, where the 2026 Gold Awardees will be revealed. Zero 10, the digital-art platform launched in Miami Beach in 2025, returns with a presentation titled Generation, curated by Karen Archey with Eli Scheinman.

How is the fair organised?

The show floor is divided into sectors, each with a different purpose. The 2026 numbers come from Art Basel's exhibitor announcement.

  • Galleries: the main sector, with 204 exhibitors showing Modern and contemporary work.
  • Kabinett: 26 focused presentations staged inside Galleries booths.
  • Nova: 20 galleries showing new work by up to three artists each.
  • Positions: 12 solo projects by emerging artists.
  • Survey: 16 historically focused presentations from 18 galleries.
  • Zero 10: 21 galleries and platforms presenting art shaped by digital culture.

Nova, Positions and Survey are where most first-time exhibitors appear, which makes them the best place to see work you have not met before.

When is it, and what are the hours?

Sat 5 Dec11:00 to 18:00Public, ticket

The public hours are from Art Basel's 2026 announcement; VIP card holders receive their own timings with their invitation. Arrive with time to spare at the end of the day: Art Basel's visitor rules say the fair closes at its scheduled time, some entrances may close early or become exit-only, and a ticket does not guarantee seeing the whole show.

Where is it held?

The fair fills the Miami Beach Convention Center at 1901 Convention Center Drive, Miami Beach, FL 33139, which the venue says is about 12 miles from Miami International Airport. The building sits in the arts district north of Lincoln Road, close to the New World Center, the Bass museum and Collins Park.

How do tickets work?

Art Basel says tickets are on sale in its official online shop, with limited availability, in two families: Premium Passes and General tickets. Prices are shown in the shop and are not repeated here because they change by category and date.

Buy only from Art Basel. Its rules state that tickets from unauthorised sources are void and that resale is grounds for cancellation. The VIP Preview Days cannot be bought: access comes through a gallery or a collector relationship. Guided tours, run with ArtNexus daily during show hours, are sold separately and do not include admission.

How do I get there and get around?

Most visitors fly into Miami International, 12 miles away, then take a taxi or rideshare across the causeway. The venue lists Uber, Lyft, Miami-Dade Transit stops, the free trolley and Freebee's on-demand rides among its ways to arrive.

The city's trolley is free and runs from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day, with an average of about 20 minutes between vehicles on each of its four routes: South Beach Loop, Middle Beach Loop, Collins Express and North Beach Loop. Traffic around the convention center is heavy during Art Week, so if your hotel is within a mile, walking is often quickest.

Where can I park?

The convention center's own garage has 800 spaces on its uncovered fourth and fifth levels at a $20 flat fee, open 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. every day. Enter from 1901 Convention Center Drive on the west side or 2000 Washington Avenue on the east. EV charging is on the fifth floor, accessible spaces are on the rooftop level, and valet runs near the West Lobby at $35 for standard events.

If the garage fills, the venue lists nearby city garages, including the 17th Street garages at 581 and 640 17th Street, Pennsylvania Avenue at 1661, Meridian Avenue at 1735 and 1909, and the 13th Street garage at 1550 Collins Avenue. Rates there vary by garage.

What can I bring, and what should I wear?

Art Basel's visitor rules allow one bag per person, no larger than 16 × 8 × 16 inches (40 × 20 × 40 cm), and everything is inspected at the door.

  • Allowed: a water bottle or flask up to 33 oz (1 litre); refill stations are inside the convention center.
  • Allowed: a small camera, up to 6 × 5 × 3 inches with a single lens of 80 mm or less.
  • Not allowed: backpacks, suitcases and trolleys of any size.
  • Not allowed: outside food, selfie sticks, tripods, drones, large umbrellas and art materials.
  • Not allowed: face coverings, unless needed for health, religious or disability reasons.

The Coat & Bag Check is free and first come, first served, but items are left at your own risk. There is no dress code for the fair itself: comfortable shoes and a light layer for the air-conditioned halls matter most, and private dinners and parties set their own.

Children, service animals and accessibility

Children: Art Kids offers supervised childcare for children aged 5 to 11, according to the visitor rules. Some works may have mature themes, and Art Basel keeps a list of galleries that identify as showing mature content.

Animals: pets, including emotional support animals, are not allowed in the halls. ADA-recognised service animals are welcome when leashed or under control.

Accessibility: Art Basel lends manual wheelchairs and scooters free, first come, first served, from the Coat & Bag Check in the North, West and East Lobbies. The convention center is ADA compliant, with Braille signage, the Aira visual-interpreting app and ramps at the Washington Avenue entrance, and it is a Certified Autism Center. Questions go to accessibility@artbasel.com.

Who goes, and what do first-timers get wrong?

The VIP days belong to collectors, advisers, curators and museum acquisition committees; the weekend belongs to the wider public. They are different events in the same rooms. By Friday a meaningful share of the significant work has already been placed, so a public ticket is closer to an exhibition than a market. Anyone hoping to buy needs a relationship with a gallery well before December.

The other mistake is treating the fair as the whole week. Satellite fairs, museum openings and private dinners fill Miami Art Week, and most of them are not organised by Art Basel. Plan the fair for one long day and leave the rest of the week for the city.
