What is the Venice Film Festival?

The Venice International Film Festival is held on the Lido di Venezia and run by La Biennale di Venezia, which describes it as the oldest film festival in the world, first held in 1932. An 84th edition is planned for 2027, but its dates had not been announced when this entry was checked; the 2026 festival ran from 2 to 12 September. It is in this directory because, unlike Cannes, members of the public can buy tickets to its screenings.

Who goes to the Venice Film Festival?

Filmmakers, cast and distributors with films in the programme, accredited press and industry, and a cinema-going public that buys tickets screening by screening. The Venice Production Bridge industry programme runs alongside the festival for producers and financiers.

Venice Film Festival tickets and prices

Public tickets are sold online only; for 2026 they went on sale on 24 August, priced from €10 at the Sala Corinto to €50 for evening screenings in the Sala Grande, with discounts for under-26s, over-65s and Biennale Card holders. Professionals apply instead for one of five accreditations: Press, Industry, Film Delegation, Cinema or Venice Immersive. Expect the 2027 terms to be published closer to the festival.

What to know before booking the Venice Film Festival

A public ticket buys a seat, not the red carpet. The evening premieres in the Sala Grande are the most sought after and the most expensive, while other halls on the Lido run screenings at lower prices. And the dates are not fixed to a calendar rule, so wait for La Biennale's announcement before booking anything that cannot be changed.

Venice Film Festival parties and side events

The festival brings distributor dinners, brand events and parties at hotels on the Lido and across Venice, almost all by invitation. Grand Circle organises none of it and sells no tickets, accreditation or hospitality for the Venice Film Festival.

How to get to the Lido di Venezia

Venice Marco Polo is the nearest major airport. From Venice, the Lido is reached by vaporetto or water taxi across the lagoon. The festival halls are clustered together on the island, so moving between screenings is done on foot.

Where to stay for the Venice Film Festival

Staying on the Lido puts you within walking distance of the screenings, but its hotels fill with festival guests first. Venice itself offers far more choice at the cost of a boat ride each way, which needs to be built into any screening schedule.
